Half Cab Anniversary Party at Vans Downtown Showdown
Art – Music – Culture - Skateboarding
2-4 August 2012, Westergasfabriek, Amsterdam
The biggest skate event the Netherlands has ever seen will take over the historic Westergasfabriek of Amsterdam from the 2nd to the 4th August 2012. The infamous event has travelled the globe for 7 years and will bring a festival vibe to the shores of Amsterdam’s canals for 3 days of skateboarding, art, music and creative expression including a celebration of 20 years of the Iconic Vans Half Cab Shoe, hosted by Vans Legend Steve Caballero.
Twenty years, twenty skaters, twenty photos and one shoe, that will be the premise for the opening reception of the Vans Downtown Showdown Amsterdam. From Vans Skate Legend Steve Caballero to Stevie Williams, "Twenty,” a selection of images curated by Lance Dawes, celebrates the legacy of the iconic Vans Half Cab shoe. Custom waffle grip imprinted frames were made to highlight the master lensmen's work and to symbolize the “sole” of skateboarding. Vans Skate Legend and musician Ray Barbee will play music and Vans Skate Legend John Cardiel will play a DJ set while lucky attendees get to bump elbows with skate idols like Steve Caballero, Geoff Rowley and more. The exhibition at Transformerhuis in the Westergasfabriek at the Westerpark opens its doors at 17:00 the 2nd of August and is free and open to the public.
Friday the 3rd of August, invited guests will attend a private premiere of “Bones Brigade: An Autobiography” in anticipation of a new chapter of skate history beginning Saturday the 4th of August at 12 Noon at the Vans Downtown Showdown Skate event.
The theme of Amsterdam’s iconic waterways will weave its way through the Vans Downtown Showdown with windmill inspired skate features, a typical Dutch marketplace and a full day of festivities the 4th of August, including a top secret music headliner to be announced July 27th.
While the best skaters from the US and Europe compete for 50,000 Euro in prize money on 4 one-of-a-kind obstacles designed and built by Flip Skateboards, Palace, Blueprint and Antiz for the event, the side-lines will be bustling with things to see and do. Pick up a delicious Waffle from the Godfather of Vans, Steve Van Doren, at the Waffle Stand then head to the Vans Market Stall where Vans Skaters Geoff Rowley, Tony Alva, Ray Barbee, Steve Caballero and many more will sign their lives away during the athlete signing.
Local Shops Ben-G, Rodolfo’s, Independent Outlet, Subliminal, Tom’s Skateshop & Reprezent will sell their wares at the marketplace and East London brand Lovenskate will teach screen-printing techniques while customising t-shirts throughout the day. For downtown girls, amazing sensation WAH Nails will give free nail makeovers at their booth.
At Skatepark Amsterdam’s booth, learn more about the skatepark that represents the heart of the skate scene in Amsterdam and find out the latest development in their struggle against eviction. Sign the petition, support, pitch in and help.
Rotterdam based artist collective Lastplak, the designers of the Downtown Showdown 2012 artwork, will create one of their famous live paintings and showcase a gallery of their work. They will also have a limited run of their new book available for sale.
